Tomi Adeyemi‘s Children of Blood and Bone made huge waves when it was published last March, so it was no surprise when the YA debut was optioned for film. Continuing on its relatively fast track of success, the novel’s adaptation already has some major updates!
Rick Famuyiwa, the critically-acclaimed director of Dope, Our Family Wedding, and Confirmation among other projects, has signed on to helm and produce the film. Temple Hill, the production company behind Love, Simon and The Maze Runner, is also producing in conjunction with Sunswept Entertainment, according to THR.
The magical fantasy adventure follows Zélie, a teen from the nation of Orïsha, where the maji clans of the land were decimated by a cruel king. She is a daughter of one such maji, just trying to get by. But when Zélie meets an unlikely ally who can help her bring the magic back, they’ll have to risk everything to change their world. Filled with a wild journey into the unknown, powerful messaging, and twisty romantic tension, there’s something here for everyone!
The movie does not have a cast or a release time frame established quite yet. In the meantime, now is the perfect time to catch up on the novel if you haven’t already.
The sequel, Children of Virtue and Vengeance, is due out on June 4, 2019 and is available for preorder via Amazon.
