RIVERDALE’s KJ Apa To Replace Kian Lawley In THE HATE U GIVE

THE HATE U GIVE has found its new Chris in the star of RIVERDALE!

KJ Apa, who became a breakout star thanks to his role as Archie on The CW show Riverdale, stepping up for The Hate U Give reshoots.

The Hate U Give follows Starr Carter (Amandla Stenberg), a 16-year-old who witnesses an unarmed friend named Khalil (Algee Smith) fatally shot by police and must find the best way to speak out about the incident while living two separate lives: One at her poor but supportive neighborhood, one at her less understanding suburban prep school.

Apa is taking on the role of Chris, Starr’s boyfriend at a school that her parents don’t know about. While Chris certainly doesn’t have a clear understanding of Starr’s life, he makes an effort and plays an important part as her two worlds collide.

Filming was initially completed in the fall with Kian Lawley in the role of Chris. However, a video of Lawley spouting off black stereotypes and racial slurs was discovered on the Internet in January. In February, 20th Century Fox fired Lawley and vowed to reshoot with a new actor.

According to Deadline, KJ Apa has already darkened his red Archie hair and is in Atlanta with the original cast members needed for reshoots, which start today and will take place over the next week.

The Hate U Give also stars Amandla Stenberg, Regina Hall, Russell Hornsby, Lamar Johnson, Issa Rae, Common, Sabrina Carpenter, and Meghan Lawless. The film does not have a release date quite yet.
