Russell Hornsby, Lamar Johnson join THE HATE U GIVE Adaptation

THE HATE U GIVE movie has added two more actors in Russell Hornsby and Lamar Johnson.

The adaptation for Angie Thomas‘ debut novel, The Hate U Give, seems to be on the fast track to getting made, as it was announced earlier that Fences actor Russell Hornsby and The Next Step‘s Lamar Johnson will be joining Amandla Stenberg in the Black Lives Matter-inspired drama.

The story is about a teen named Starr (Stenberg) who lives in a poverty-stricken area while going to a prep school, who then witnesses a police officer shoot her unarmed best friend, and has to deal with trying to figure out the best solution that doesn’t destroy all that she has.

Hornsby will be playing Starr’s father, while Johnson will be playing Steven, her older brother.

Along with Fences, Hornsby’s credits include ABC Family’s Lincoln Heights, HBO’s In Treatment, NBC’s Grimm, and he will also be in Netflix’s upcoming Seven Seconds.

Johnson will be seen with Halle Berry and Daniel Craig in the crime drama film Kings, and was cast earlier this year to be in the X-Men: Dark Phoenix superhero movie.
