Monument 14

According to Variety, the film adaptation of Emmy Laybourne’s YA novel Monument 14 has acquired a director. Strange Weather Films has hired Sandy Widyanata to direct the first film in the trilogy. Widyanata has won multiple awards for her short films.

Here’s the Goodreads synopsis for Monument 14:

Fourteen kids. One superstore. A million things that go wrong.

In Emmy Laybourne’s action-packed debut novel, six high school kids (some popular, some not), two eighth graders (one a tech genius), and six little kids trapped together in a chain superstore build a refuge for themselves inside. While outside, a series of escalating disasters, beginning with a monster hailstorm and ending with a chemical weapons spill, seems to be tearing the world-as they know it-apart.

The script was adapted by Emmy Laybourne and Brad Peyton (San Andreas). Producers will include Aron Warner, Andrew Adamson, and Peyton and Jeff Fierson.

“We’re thrilled to have Sandy on board for the launch of this fantastic franchise,” Warner has said. “Monument 14 is visceral and grounded and Sandy brings the right sensibility to the table.”
