SDCC 2017 | SHADOWHUNTERS Interview with Dominic Sherwood and Katherine McNamara

We sat down with SHADOWHUNTERS stars Dominic Sherwood and Katherine McNamara to discuss the future of Clace.

Dominic Sherwood and Katherine McNamara both confirm that their powers on Shadowhunters are very much triggered by their emotions. “We want to be able to control these completely consciously without it needing an emotional trigger. And I think what we’re starting to find out…[looks to Kat] oh sh*t, oops! I’m sorry. There’s that one scene…”

Kat concludes, “It’s amazing! It’s beautiful! Ultimately, it’s almost ironic that Sebastian is the one that tells Clary that emotions give us power, and sort of open that up to her, because that leads back to so many different things. It sort of enlightens their powers for good.”

Dom also noted that Shadowhunters are not emotionless and that parabatai are probably the more emotional than human beings, or mundanes, as he meant to say. “These powers, that’s a part of that, learning to control it and find an avenue into exhibiting these powers is what Jace is trying to do now.”

In regards to any specific scene that had a significance to their character’s development, both stated that the finale episode, but of course couldn’t explain any further than that. “It’s one of those moments that everything just kind of fell into place,” Kat stated. “And we were all in the right place, and had this solidarity. It was brutal and it was hard and it took a long time, but it was worth it.”

One working with Will Tudor, who plays Sebastian/Jonathan, they both agreed he was a great addition to the cast. “He fit in from day one. We all knew it was such a big character, and we knew that we needed someone fantastic, and Will really brought it,” said Kat.

“I’ve known Will for years,” added Dominic. “I knew Will from London six years ago, we used to work together. And I got the note, Will and I have a manager together now as well. So, I got a note from him, saying ‘hey, Will is auditioning for this, would you mind setting on the producers,’ and I was like, ‘of course.'” But it seems he didn’t need to do anything, because the producers already knew of Will and was set to make him Sebastian.

Shadowhunters airs on Mondays at 8pm on Freeform.
