SDCC 2019 Interview: Danielle Panabaker on THE FLASH

Danielle Panabaker has been a part of The Flash since day 1, but her ever-evolving character(s) always throw some curve balls. We chatted with Danielle at San Diego Comic Con about those Caitlin/Killer Frost dynamics, directing, and how the show’s most endearing friendship will endure Cisco’s major change.

“I feel like in Season 5 we got to explore Killer Frost and Caitlin’s relationship with each other and in Season 6, we’re going to explore Killer Frost’s relationship with the rest of Team Flash… I think there’s a lot of fun to be had with Killer Frost because she hasn’t had a lot of experiences and she gets to try things for the first time, which I think will be cool to see. Like, how does she feel about pizza?”

Killer Frost is also getting a very cool upgrade this season– one that’s a bit belated, according to the actress.

“We have the original suit in Season 4 and we actually designed the new suit in Season 5, but there was never an opportunity to write it into one of the scripts… but I’m really excited about this suit. We got to pay an homage to some of the comics, which I love.”

Killer Frost may be testing out new dynamics, but Caitlin is also seeing a major change in her oldest and best friendship now that Cisco has taken the metahuman cure. Panabaker, however, says that cure or no cure, Cisco and Caitlin are still tight.

“I think their friendship will remain as strong as it’s always been. That was a tough journey for the two of them to take last year and I thought that was some really beautiful material between those two characters. I think Caitlin just wants Cisco to be happy, so their friendship will remain consistent and strong.”

What’s next for the actress? Directing Season 6 Episode 6, a follow-up to her debut directing gig on Season 5 Episode 18 of the show. But simultaneously acting and directing can pose some challenges of its own.

“One of the hardest parts was directing myself. I did not enjoy that. It was really hard because there were so many people in those scenes and I couldn’t watch the monitor, so I couldn’t really see what we were getting, and there’s no time to stop and watch playback. That was a challenge, for sure.”
