SUPERNATURAL writer Eugenie Ross-Leming talks about what’s coming in Season 14 and unexplored possibilities!
We sat down with Supernatural writer and executive producer Eugenie Ross-Leming at San Diego Comic-Con to talk about the direction of the show’s impressive 14th season and keeping up with some wild genealogy!
“It starts out with a lot of tension and anxiety and trying to rebuild… It’s certainly the overriding tone of the first six episodes,” the writer said. Part of that rebuilding is bringing back big characters from previous seasons, including Gabriel. “We wanted him back, so we made it happen. That’s one of the good things: You can always bring back someone you love.”
The returning characters are good news, because Team Free Will needs all hands on deck to fight off this season’s villain: “I think Michael will be with us, one way or another, longer. He’s more formidable than Asmodeus. The way he damages others– He’s more pernicious and it lasts longer.”
We already know that Dean will still be Dean at some points in the season, thanks to her writer partner, Brad Buckner, but Ross-Leming wasn’t really willing it get into details beyond that.
“There’s a twist to it, but there is dealing with the aftermath,” she said of Dean’s psychological troubles to come.
The end of Season 13 opened up some major new alternative universe possibilities. Many of those big possibilities lay in the genealogy. For instance, John and Mary Winchester don’t marry, but do they have children with other people in their alternate world of doppelgängers?
“I hadn’t thought about that,” she admits. “I don’t know if Brad [Buckner] thought about it. We find ourselves doing so much with genealogies and legacies, you know. Someone turns out to be the secret cousin or offspring of… and it’s such a rich feast to be working with the son of Lucifer and that in itself– and what’s sort of happening with that character– that that’s sort of occupying.” That doesn’t mean it’s never going to happen!
