SDCC Interview: Roundtable with Rick Gonzalez from ARROW

We sit down with Rick Gonzalez to talk Arrow season 7 and what to expect from Rene this year.

When asked where we find Rene at the start of the season, Rick Gonzalez didn’t wan to tease too much, but was happy to talk about where Rene’s head is at the beginning of the season.

“I think mentally, the thing to keep in mind is obviously being a vigilante has been outlawed in season 6. So there is that dilemma that the characters have to take into account. And that’s what I love about the show, we try to ground it as much on a real level with all the jurisdiction that happens on the show the characters have to adhere to or not. There’re a lot of decisions that have to be made, especially with Oliver being in prison, telling us to keep fighting. But how do we do that, how do we interpret that. I think that right away you’re going to see how we start to interpret what ‘fighting back’ means for each character.”

With everyone on the team finding love, we ask if Rene will finally get a love interest.

“I think the love of Rene’s life is Zoe. For him it’s being a dad. For me it’s more interesting to see him try to become a complete dad in his own way than to try to find a love interest. Now if that happens, that fine. You know he struck out with Thea so I don’t think he’s going to try again. But he loves his daughter and I think he’s more focused on that.”

Gonzalez goes into discussing what he wants to explore more for Rene in Season 7.

“I think redemption for me is perfect because I feel like that’s where Rene’s been his entire life. Wanting to right the wrongs in his life or to change the trajectory that he’s been dealt. So redemption’s no stranger to him.”

Arrow season 7 premieres October 15th on The CW.
