Outside and uncontrollable forces are working against the relationships of both SHADOWHUNTERS and Downworlders in “A Window Into an Empty Room.”
Warning: This Shadowhunters post contains plenty of spoilers from this evening’s TV episode, “A Window Into an Empty Room,” which first aired Tuesday, April 24th on The CW.
When Simon (Alberto Rosende) goes into his apartment, Heidi (Tessa Mossey) happens to be in there, and she tells him that they’re bonded now since she believes he sired her. He doesn’t know what to say about it he know there’s something about her that unsettles him. Later we see him talk with Maia (Alish Wainwright) about her, trying to figure out what to do.
Alec (Matthew Daddario) is still concerned about how their future will be ever since he saw Magnus’ (Harry Shum, Jr.) collection of mementos from past lovers. Magnus tries to reason with him, but it rubs Alec the wrong way, which rubs Magnus the wrong way, and Alec leaves in a huff. *sad face*
Maryse (Nicola Correia-Damude) makes and unannounced visit to the Institute and almost doesn’t get past the entrance since she’s officially exiled, but Alec appears before they close the door on her. She lets them know that she’s found a place to live but just came by to spend time with her children, including Jace (Dominic Sherwood). She even assures Alec and Izzy the de-runing was painless, but we know better!
Clary (Katherine McNamara) is trying to find out about what kind of greater demon attacked her and killed Ithuriel, but she can’t find anything on it and wonders to Luke (Isaiah Mustafa), over the phone, if she should let everyone know, but Luke worries they could get in trouble. She hasn’t even talked to Jace, since she believes he’s at the City of Bones getting treatment…
…but Jace is actually spending his time with Lilith (Anna Hopkins), still under her control. She needs him to get one more virtuous mundane in order for Jonathan to be resurrected. Then she tells Jace how she wants him to suffer and grieve for his lost friends and family once it’s all over.
Maryse and Izzy (Emeraude Toubia) spend some private mother-daughter time talking, and Maryse admits feeling lost, no longer a Shadowhunter and runeless.
Alec happens to find Jace on the streets, as he was just about to grab his final victim, and they go back to the Institute, where Clary greets him as well, but he’s rebuffs her when she wants to talk to him privately.
Simon tries to find Raphael in his place, but Heidi catfished him into coming so she can spend time with him. She tells him what Raphael did to her. When she tries to kiss him, Simon rebuffs her, explaining that he has a girlfriend. But when Heidi asks for her name, he doesn’t answer and leaves.
When Clary goes to Magnus for help, he realizes that it’s the same demon that corrupted the leylines, and sends a message for help to a Brother Zachariah, who agrees to meet. Clary also admits that she finds Jace acting strangely, to which Magnus thinks it to just be relationship issues.
At dinner with the Lightwoods, Jace is playing the part of a good Shadowhunter all the while looking for a target. When Izzy’s doctor friend Charlie Cooper (Brooks Darnell) comes in, Jace has found his target.
Magnus texts Alec that he can’t make it, so Alec gets more alcohol for himself, and has some small talk with the other gay Shadowhunter, Underhill (Steve Byers).
Simon is there while Maia’s working, and Luke greets them as well. Luke offers his help to Maryse in adjusting to her new status. It seems they have something in common that could bring them even closer. Could this be the start of something more…personal???
While waiting for Brother Zachariah, Magnus admits to Clary that they had a fight.
Brother Zachariah (Jonathan Ho) has arrived!
He does not look like the other Silent Brothers and is very human looking – he is of Asian descent and has silver streaks in his hair, and his eyes and mouth are not sewn, though he still communicates telepathically and not through speech. He gives Magnus some ancient text even though he’s really not supposed to, but he will offer his help to any friend of Will Herondale. Clary obviously recognizes the surname and Magnus explains that they were both close to Jace’s ancestor, Will. When Clary asks about Jace’s treatment, they find out that Jace never went to the Silent City.
Izzy takes the time away from the table to talk to Simon. Simon gives her words of encouragement and she hugs him, which Heidi notices from outside the window.
Alec, having had a few too many drinks, hangs with Underhill, and Underhill offers to get him back to the Institute from the back entrance.
Heidi confronts Izzy, believing her to be Simon’s girlfriend, and they get into a fight. Simon stops Izzy from killing Heidi, pleading with her that she needs help, so she does and goes back to the bar.
Luckily, Izzy gets back to Charlie just in time, because Jace was about to take him outside.
While that’s happening, Alec and Underhill are out in the back waiting for a cab. Alec tells him about having trouble with Magnus. Brian tells him that Nephilim love once and fiercely, so he understands the difficulty of being in a relationship with a Downworlder, especially an immortal.
When Ollie (Alexandra Ordolis) stops by to talk to Luke, Jace sees her as another virtuous mundane and follows after her.
Simon leads an unsuspecting Heidi into the hands of Kyle (Chai Hansen) and his Praetor Lupus group to help her get better, but he feels guilty about deceiving her.
Magnus and Clary are returning from their meeting with Brother Zachariah and suddenly (almost all too easily), Magnus begins putting the pieces together when he recounts Clary’s encounter with Jace earlier, and theorizes that Lilith may be the one who attacked Clary and gave the elixir to Jace, though they still don’t know why.
Jace, disguised as The Owl, attacks Ollie, but before he can take her, Clary, Magnus, and Luke appear and go on the defensive. The Owl reveals himself to be Jace and runs, much to the shock of all involved. But so does Ollie, now under the control of Lilith.
Highlights:
- Brother Zachariah! If you’ve read The Infernal Devices and The Mortal Instruments books by Cassandra Clare, you would understand. If you haven’t, just know that this Silent Brother is more than just a pretty face.
- Jace is revealed to be The Owl. Of course, we already knew this, but now they know, too!
- Magnus and Alec have their first big tiff, and no one’s happy, especially when it seems he’s getting too buddy buddy with fellow Shadowhunter Underhill (Steve Byers).
- This might not be a big deal for some, but dang, it’s been a long time since we’ve seen Simon and Izzy have a scene together.
- This needs to be mentioned again – Brother Zachariah was in this episode! And he mentioned Will Herondale!
