Here’s the “This World Inverted” recap and commentary, in which Clary goes into a parallel dimension to find her father and rescue her mother, but it’s not as easy as it sounds
Last Monday’s Shadowhunters episode was especially good because we got to see the characters play a different side of themselves when Clary goes into another dimension where things are more peaceful, and in my “This World Inverted” recap and commentary, we find out why it isn’t as appealing as it sounds.
We open up the scene to the Seelie glade where Meliorn brings Jace and Clary. Meliorn explains Clary’s necklace is a Portal shard from another dimension. That dimension is the key to taking Clary to Valentine, and thus to her mother.
Isabelle returns to the Institute and Alec asks where she’d been. She’s mad at him and tells him that Meliorn’s alive and that’s what matters, while Lydia is questioning another Shadowhunter, Raj, who was there. Raj tells her they were ambushed by wolves, vampires, and a possible Shadowhunter.
The Seelies’ dimensional doorways are secret to even the Clave, but Meliorn discloses it to Jace and Clary because he owes a life debt. But he’ll only allow Clary to go through the portal since he owes his life debt to her. They ask what the alternate dimension is like, and he tells them that Shadowhunters and demons don’t exist in it since they had won the war against the demons centuries ago, and that Seelies have conformed to the mundane way of life.
Once in that dimension, Clary’s alternate self in there could consume her if she lets it. She would have to find someone or something to keep her grounded to her dimension to avoid that from happening. If she doesn’t, she could end up assimilated into that dimension and never returning.
At the Jade Wolf, Simon arrives, causing a stir, and says he’s been appointed ambassador to the werewolves by Raphael. But that might just be an excuse to talk to Luke.
This is different as Simon seems to actually be trying to live among the vampires and learn their ways.
It’s now night and Clary gives Jace the Cup for safekeeping. Meliorn allows Clary to come back for Jace for help when she finds Valentine.
Clary arrives in her alternate dimensional (AD) self and is in her home. In this dimension, AD Valentine and AD Jocelyn are together and are happy. She adjusts herself and is about to eat breakfast with her parents. She seems already turned until she sees “psychic and tarot card reader” AD Magnus Bane on an infomercial and remembers. She excuses herself and leaves.
I could watch that informercial all day!
Lydia arrests Isabelle for high treason as they believe she was involved in Meliorn’s rescue attempt.
Clary bumps into AD Simon and and he pulls her in where he’s having coffee with a very mundane-looking and cute-nerdy AD Isabelle (who happens to be working for Clary’s father) and AD Alec. Simon orders a coffee at Java Jace’s food truck, where AD Jace is working. AD Jace gets out of the truck and pulls her aside for a kiss, which totally surprises her. She looks about to sucked into the dimension again, but gets distracted and runs off.
Whoa! Geeky Izzy! Party planner Alec! And who knew there could be a Jace that runs his own food truck! Also, this over-exposure look really makes Dominic’s two-toned eyes pop! Plus, too bright!!!
Luke and Simon are outside talking, and Luke warns Simon not to go home until he’s able to control his impulses. Fisk appears suddenly, ready to arrest Luke. Simon loses control and attacks Fisk. Luckily, Luke stopped him and Fisk is only knocked unconscious.
As Jace and Meliorn are waiting for Clary to return, Meliorn senses demons coming as they’re attracted to the alternate dimension that Clary is in.
Clary is at AD Magnus Bane’s place getting a tarot card reading, again being attracted to this dimension when a cat jumps onto the table, which brings her back to her purpose. AD Magnus introduces her to Chairman Meow and Church. She tells him she’s a Shadowhunter and he laughs it off. But she proves it by drawing a demon. She tells him she needs his help, but he says his magic’s gone dormant.
Yay! Chairman Meow and Church! And I must say that the casting of Church was purrrrfect! It would be great if Church could show up at the Institute every once in a while, but I understand the trouble with bringing a cat, or any animal, on set. So, this was a nice nod ot the pets from the books.
Alec confesses to Lydia about what happened at the City of Bones entrance. He tells her that they were all there trying to stop a Downworlder war. Alec says he wants to trade the Cup to keep Izzy from going to trial. Lydia says it’s possible. But when Alec tries to show the Cup to her, they find it’s no longer where he put it, and Alec knows exactly who took it.
AD Magnus is trying to get his magic going again, but nothing works until Clary gives him her portal shard. He’s able to see that the portal back to her dimension is in the sub-basement of the Institute, which there’s a party at that night and she’ll be there since it’s AD Valentine’s party. She tells him to meet her there as she leaves to meet up with AD Isabelle.
Alec goes to see Izzy and finds out that Izzy helped Jace steal the Cup. She tells him that Jace and Clary took Meliorn to the Seelie realm so he can’t be tracked, but Alec knows a way to track him through the parabatai bond. Izzy says that it’ll weaken or even break the bond, but Alec says Jace already weakened it.
Fisk awakens tied to a chair, where Simon is, acting like he’s about to exsanguinate Fisk. Luke comes in and shoots Simon, “killing” him and rescuing Fisk from the demonic killer.
Clary goes to see AD Isabelle because she’s freaking out about a bruise on her face from kickboxing class. Clary asks her to add someone to the guest list. At the party, everything is going very perfectly and everyone is happy, including AD Valentine and AD Jocelyn. Clary sees them happy and dancing. AD Jace arrives and AD Valentine introduces himself as Mr. Morgenstern. They shake hands, and it’s so weird. And AD Jace is nervous!
When AD Valentine leaves, AD Jace asks what’s going on with her as she’s being aloof towards him. She agrees to dance with him, and she gets sucked into the dimension.
I love the idea of this AD Jace being all nervous and stuttery when trying to act confident around Clary’s father. It’s definitely a cute situation, and one that we’d never see in Clary’s own dimension. Besides, we like our Jace.
Alec is ready to try tracking Jace with Hodge’s help although Hodge is not happy about it, and even Lydia is concerned about this. Hodge says he’ll do it as long as he doesn’t let the bond break. He says he has to do it for Izzy. He won’t sacrifice his sister for Clary, or as he puts it, Jace’s girlfriend.
I’m not particularly happy with Alec in this episode, at least not in this dimension, and it’s irking me that he’s still acting like Jace doesn’t mean anything to him anymore. They are parabatai!
A demon arrives at the portal entrance and Jace and Meliorn fight it, but Alec’s tracking is physically hurting him, and both Jace and Alec are screaming in pain. The demon escapes and enters the portal.
Good job, Alec! Jerk.
AD Magnus isn’t on the list, but AD Alec allows him entry, much to AD Magnus’ surprise and confusion. AD Alec gives AD Magnus a drink and says “To us.” They introduce each other, but AD Magnus sees Clary and excuses himself. AD Alec finds he likes a challenge.
Ah, the switcheroo! Cute!
AD Simon interrupts AD Jace and Clary’s dance and there’s a very all-too-buddy-buddy moment between the two guys. AD Simon tells Clary he’s going to ask AD Izzy to move in with him. She’s completely into this alternate dimension now, and when AD Magnus goes to her, it takes a bit of magic from him for her to finally remember. Clary leaves the room with AD Magnus, somewhat sad-looking to leave, seeing her parents dancing together lovingly. AD Jace spots Clary leave with AD Magnus, and he doesn’t look happy.
Fisk and Luke are at the morgue, and Fisk thanks Luke for saving his life, telling him IA will no longer be watching him. Alaric comes in when Fisk leaves, and Simon unzips himself from the body bag. Alaric tells Simon the pack is indebted to him for saving Luke.
Clary and AD Magnus are looking for the portal when AD Jace finds them. He’s about to break up with Clary when the demon arrives. She knocks it down and AD Jace is freaked out, like hands-shaking and near tears freaked out. Luckily our Jace comes to and goes through the portal since Meliorn has to close it to prevent more demons from coming. He enters AD Jace’s body in time and Clary is completely relieved.
Alec and Lydia arrive at where the portal entrance was, but they’re too late as both Meliorn and the portal are gone.
Jace and Clary fight the demon and Jace is able to kill it, but not before it stings Jace on his neck. He’s injured, but he insists on going to find Valentine. AD Magnus finds the portal using the portal shard to open the door. AD Magnus thanks Clary for helping him and and Jace and Clary go through the portal.
Alec goes to see Izzy. He tells her the parabatai bond is very weak now, and says they were going to try to use the Cup as a trade to stop her trial. They have a brother-sister bonding moment as he apologizes.
Jace and Clary arrive at Valentine’s lair, Jace has his stele now and tries to heal himself, but it doesn’t fully work, only enough. It looks like Valentine is not there and neither is Jocelyn, but they do find Jace’s father, Michael Wayland, locked in a cage, even though Michael Wayland is supposed to be dead.
Well, that’s just weird, and I’m hesitant, but this is definitely not what I was expecting and I’m curious as to see what happens now that Jace’s father is in the picture!
