Mark Gatiss is giving some vague hints on what fans can expect for Season 4 of SHERLOCK, including the likelihood of “tragedy” in the upcoming story line.
“You can always expect tragedy as well as adventure, that’s just how it goes.”
Though he claims not to know for sure, Martin Freeman, who plays Watson on the show has a pretty substantial theory regarding Watson’s wife Mary (played of Freeman’s real life significant other, Amanda Abbington) based on the source material:
“While we play fast and loose with the original stories, we generally follow the trajectory of what Conan Doyle did… So [John] gets married, and then Mary dies – so at some point presumably she’ll die.”
However, Gatiss shied away from that theory when it was brought up in his latest interview:
“Just because it’s in the stories doesn’t mean it’ll happen in the series because there’s an awful lot of changes and an awful lot of places to go and things to do
Still, we can’t help what wonder what this tragedy will be and how it will affect our favorite characters!
