STAR TREK BEYOND reveals Sulu as gay

Star Trek Beyond will go where no Star Trek has gone before and reveal Hikaru Sulu as gay and with a partner.

Sulu, the character who was played by openly gay actor George Takei in the original Star Trek series, will be revealed in the upcoming Star Trek Beyond to be an openly gay character, a sexual preference that hasn’t been shown in any character in Star Trek, in either TV or film.

John Cho, the actor who will currently plays Sulu in the J.J. Abrams versions of the franchise, approves of the change and likes that it wasn’t made into a big publicity announcement during the production of the movie:

“I liked the approach, which was not to make a big thing out [of] it,” Cho told Australia’s Herald Sun, “which is where I hope we are going as a species, to not politicize one’s personal orientations.”

Cho also revealed that writer/actor Simon Pegg and director Justin Lin agreed to have Sulu become a gay character as a nod to Takei, who came out in 2005, and is currently married to his long-time partner-turned-husband, Brad Altman Takei.

John Cho actually is in this movie!

Star Trek Beyond opens in theaters July 22, 2016.
