‘The Avengers’ fail to beat “The Hunger Games’ midnight opening

While it was very close, The Avengers fell short in midnight ticket sales, coming in a million dollars behind The Hunger Games.  See story from E Online below.

UPDATE: Sellouts, schmellouts. While The Avengers didn’t top The Hunger Games at midnight, it got awfully close, and set a new mark for superhero movies with an $18.7 million take in 12 a.m., Friday screenings.

The Avengers is going to be big, but it’s looking less likely that it’s going to beat The Hunger Games.

At least in the early box-office going, and especially tonight at midnight.

Here is a list of the current top 10 Midnight Openings courtesy of Box Office Mojo:

1. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 – $43.5 million
2. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 – $30.3 million
3. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse – $30.1 million
4. The Twilight Saga: New Moon – $26.3 million
5. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 – $24 million
6. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince – $22.2 million
7. The Hunger Games – $19.7 million
8. The Avengers – $18.7 million
9. The Dark Knight – $18.5 million
10. Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith – $16.5 million

Congrats go out to The Avengers for having the highest opening of any super hero movie ever! And a special mention for The Hunger Games for holding tight to seventh place!
