Unravel the phrase that gave THE HATE U GIVE its title in a new clip!
The first movie clip from The Hate U Give is here and it’s a powerful moment ripped straight from the books!
The Hate U Give follows Starr Carter (Amandla Stenberg), a 16-year-old who witnesses an unarmed friend named Khalil (Algee Smith) fatally shot by police and must find the best way to speak out about the incident while living two separate lives: One at her troubled but supportive neighborhood, one at her less understanding suburban prep school.
The clip takes place just after Khalil’s funeral, when Starr’s father, Maverick (Russell Hornsby), comes in to check on her and she dives into Tupac’s definition of “THUG LIFE”, which also happens to be one of the last discussions Starr had with Khalil. With the help of her dad, Starr is able to pull that message about systematic hate and oppression into a closer context surrounding her own neighborhood.
Prepare your emotions and watch the clip at the top of the post.
The Hate U Give hits theaters on October 19, 2018. The incredible YA novel by Angie Thomas on which the movie is based is available wherever books are sold.
