The official trailer for the movie adaptation of Angie Thomas’ THE HATE U GIVE has been released and it has power.
We’ve been waiting for this movie ever since Angie Thomas’ book of the same name hit bookstore shelves. Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, The Hate U Give gave young readers something to really talk about that relates to the current status of society, at least for many people. It doesn’t shy away from the topic of police shootings of black people, and it looks like the movie is taking the story to heart.
Starr Carter is constantly switching between two worlds: the poor, mostly black, neighborhood where she lives and the rich, mostly white, prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Now, facing pressures from all sides of the community, Starr must find her voice and stand up for what’s right.
Starr is played by the talented Amandla Stenberg, who had made appearances in previous young adult book-based movies, such as The Hunger Games and Everything, Everything. The rest of the cast includes Regina Hall (Girls Trip), Russell Hornsby (NBC’s Grimm), Common (Suicide Squad), Anthony Mackie (Avengers: Infinity War), K.J. Apa (The CW’s Riverdale), and Issa Rae (HBO’s Insecure).
Amandla can be seen in this summer’s sci-fi young adult book-based film, The Darkest Minds.
The Hate U Give hits theaters October 19th.
