THE MAZE RUNNER conclusion THE DEATH CURE is coming, but not in 2016.
Fox has announced the official release date for THE MAZE RUNNER: THE DEATH CURE and it’s a little later than most fans were expecting. Rather than sticking with the September release dates assigned to the first film and the upcoming sequel THE SCORCH TRIALS, the conclusion will take a few extra months and hit theaters on February 17, 2017.
The change could be happening for a number of reasons. It’s possible that the cast and crew need some time off to focus on other projects. Collider points out that Wes Ball has not yet been confirmed as the director of the final film, so there’s a possibility that Fox is leaving space to bring in a new filmmaker (though Wes seems pretty dedicated to the series and we’re not resting on that theory too heavily). Most likely, THE DEATH CURE just needs more time to film several complex action sequences and to fill in the CGI-heavy gaps in the post-production process.
In a refreshing twist, it seems Fox has no intentions to split the THE DEATH CURE into two movies, avoiding a trend that’s become over-saturated and probably wouldn’t work for this film.
The second MAZE RUNNER film, THE SCORCH TRIALS, hits theaters on September 18, 2015.
