Jacob Lofland, best known for his roles in MUD and JUSTIFIED, has been cast in next year’s sequel to THE MAZE RUNNER, titled THE SCORCH TRIALS.
He’ll play Aris Jones. The character is the lone male subject from WCKD’s “Group B” in the books, but an earlier report suggests the role has been changed to create two lone females in two all-male groups. In addition, character description doesn’t discuss Aris’ position within Group B other than to say he is a “significant character”:
Lofland will play Aris Jones, a significant character from Dashner’s second novel. After The Gladers escape the maze, they meet Aris and discover his connection to the maze and the people who built it.
We can’t say that we love the story changes these recent casting announcements seem to suggest. Is FOX afraid of losing the male audience members by introducing a group of young women into the equation? Were they hesitant to show violence and strife between a group of males and a group of females? We don’t know, but we’re hoping these questions get asked soon.
THE SCORCH TRIALS will hit theaters on September 18, 2015.
