THE WALKING DEAD Recap | Episode 6.01 “First Time Again”

We get a different format of storytelling for this season 6 premiere episode of The Walking Dead, titled “First Time Again.”  The story is being told in segments interspersed between black and white flashbacks and their present situation, which is a pretty intense situation indeed.

Present:

Rick speaks to several residents of the Alexandria community along with his group above a quarry filled with walkers. There are tens of thousands of them in there.

On the other side of the quarry, a semi that’s been blocking the walkers way out falls into the quarry, making the way open.  Rick tells them they have to do it now.  What it is, we don’t know yet, but the Alexandrians are scared, and one of them tells Rick they aren’t ready.  As if that matters.  It’s insane. The walkers break through another blockade that’s closer to them.

Flashback:

We see the aftermath from last season’s finale of several characters.  Deanna is still covered with her husband’s blood at the scene where he died when Father Gabriel shows up.  She tells him he was wrong and he only nods.

At the medical building, Rosita helps Tara sit up now that she’s awake, and Glenn barges in half-carrying Nick, after their melee.  Glenn covers for Nick, saying it was a walker attack to Maggie when she arrives.  Eugene comes in, shocked and happy to see Tara awake.  She jokes, thanking God nothing happened to his hair. He’s just smiling in a creepy sort of way.

in another area, Morgan tells Rick that he was right, that it wasn’t over. Rick tells him he doesn’t take chances anymore.

Abraham is drunk after having to deal with Reg’s body and as Sasha walks by, they pause briefly at each other before she walks on.

Present:

The Rick and the group are apparently luring the walkers somewhere we don’t know yet.

Flashback:

Rick tells Daryl they shouldn’t look for people anymore, saying they need to take care of themselves. He asks if Daryl has a problem with that, and he admits that he does.  The start of a new dissension between the two?

Present:

Sasha is driving with Abraham. They stop at the bottom of the hill.  We are still unsure of what’s going on, but it seems like they’re getting ready for that parade of walkers to come by.

Flashback:

While guarding the gate, Eugene encounters a new arrival of three people, saying they have been on a two-week run.  Eugene questions the guy, until the guy convinces him with a threat to beat his ass if he doesn’t open the gate. We get introduced to Scott, Annie, and Heath.  Eugene tells Heath he appreciates his “hairgame.”

Rick and Morgan walk the community, explaining a bit about the place. They find Father Gabriel and Tobin digging up two holes, but Rick says they only need one hole as they don’t bury killers. Deanna arrives and tells Rick to bring Pete’s body outside the gates, near the quarry.  Pete’s eldest son, Ron, is hiding and overhears this. Rick tells Morgan he had no choice (but to kill Pete) and that they don’t have a place for killers. But Morgan reminds him that they’re both killers.

Present:

Rick, Michonne, and Morgan wait at another area. Morgan takes this moment to ask Michonne if she took one of his protein bars (from the last time they had encountered each other and Morgan wasn’t quite as sane as he is now.) She denies it.

Flashback:

Pete’s son, Ron, follows Rick and Morgan’s car by crossing through the woods. Morgan starts digging, but Rick tells him to stop, claiming to hear something.  Here is where they finally find the quarry with all the walkers.  Ron is nearby and is being chased by some of the walkers that managed to find a way out.  Rick and Morgan come to his rescue, of course.

Present:

Daryl is leading the walkers, driving slowly on his motorbike, like the Pied Piper. Interestingly, these walkers seem faster than some of the others we’ve seen in the series.  Maybe being still in the quarry gave them the rest they need for this trek.

Flashback:

Rick and Morgan and Ron look over the quarry again. Rick asks why Ron is there, and he says he wanted to know where his dad was going to be buried. Rick warns Ron that he can’t be out there or he’s going to die, and he needs to go back with them, and Ron had planned on going back the way he got there, by going through the forest.  Rick tells Morgan this is probably why the Alexandria community has been able to survive this long, because the walkers are drawn to the noise from the quarry and have no way of getting out.  They then go back to bury Pete.

Present:

Glenn, Heath, and Nick arrive at a building filled with walkers. Glenn says they have to kill them so they don’t distract the big zombie parade from going off course. But they can’t find a way to get them out of the building to kill them.

Flashback:

In a community meeting in Deanna’s house. Heath talks about his experience with the area near the quarry. Rick explains that they have to deal with it because the blockade isn’t going to hold them there, and they’re going to soon find their way to the community.  Carol agrees in her fake innocent way, saying “it’s terrifying” and that Rick’s suggestion is probably the best way.  Deanna agrees with Rick, even though another guy named Carter offers to build the wall back up, disagreeing with Rick’s plan. Glenn whispers to Maggie to stay to watch with Deanna, even though they both know Glenn also wants Maggie safe.  She agrees, Glenn looks super relieved.
Father Gabriel offers to help, but Rick immediately and adamantly says no.
Carter again argues, this time about Rick’s leadership role, but Deanna stops him. Nick offers to help during this time, even though Glenn obviously doesn’t want him to.
Carter wants the plan explained to him in detail.  Every part.  We know he’s going to be a problem.

Present:

With Daryl on his bike, and Sasha and Abraham in their car, they lead the walkers to where Rick, Morgan, and Michonne are.

Flashback:

Rick wants to draw the walkers west, away from the community about 20 miles out. Carter is trying to argue against the plan, giving them all the possible things that could go wrong.  He’s definitely the pessimistic type.

Present:

As the walker parade arrives to where Rick, Michonne, and Morgan are, which is at a turn they want the walkers to take, some of the walkers run into the aluminum siding walls that they’ve built up to create the turn, busting their heads open in the process.

Flashback:

While working on the aluminum siding walls, Daryl tells Rick that finding other people is taking care of themselves.  Yep, Daryl still plans on going out to search for others after this is done.

Carol tells Rick he’s doing a good job.  They’ll follow Deanna’s lead, but Deanna will follow Rick’s lead.

Maggie tells Tara that Nick was responsible for Noah’s death and that he tried to kill Glenn. Maggie explains that Glenn wants to tell everyone if she feels it necessary, but that they could exile Nick for it.  Tara says she’ll just follow Maggie’s lead if she doesn’t want to tell others about Nick.

Present:

At the zombie-filled building, Glenn has Nick take a back seat, still not trusting him.  He shoots at the window, letting loose the walkers, and he and Heath shoot at them as they start coming out. Nick kills one, saving Heath’s life, surprising Glenn, and possibly redeeming himself. He allows Nick the last kill.

Flashback:

Morgan can see through Carol’s facade, asking her if she was a cop, too, saying she’s always watching. Always seems ready to handle things, as he says.  She just smiles and walks away.  Hmm… we know which side Carol will take if there were a side to take, and it’s not Morgan!

Present:

Abraham seems some going a different way, so he jumps out of the car to take care of them. Sasha calls him idiot. When he jumps back in, all happy and laughing, and talks about how he had to deal with Pete and Reg’s bodies as well, laughing about how he still might have some of Pete’s brains lodged in his ear, as if Sasha wanted to know that.

Flashback:

As they’re still building up the wall, Rick apologizes about Reg to Deanna. He tells her it was the right call to make to deal with the walkers. She asks what he wants. He says they need to all be trained. Some walkers arrive in the area, and Rick has the Alexandria residents start their training with the walkers, encouraging them to use their shovels, but they are frozen in fear and unsure of what to do. He calls to Morgan as they all go in to kill off the walkers, seeing that these Alexandria softies are hopeless.
Morgan, obviously irritated, reminds Rick what he said to him, that he doesn’t take chances anymore.

Eugene overhears a conversation between Carter and some others, including Tobin and Deanna’s son, Spencer.  Carter suggests they kill Rick before he kills them. But Eugene drops his glass jar and makes more noise trying to flee.

Rick, Daryl, and Morgan enter right as Carter looks like he’s about to shoot Eugene. Rick wrestles the gun from Carter and points it at the back of his head. Carter says to just kill him, not the others he was speaking to. Rick relinquishes the gun to Daryl and tells Carter he needs to work with them to try and survive.

Present:

They see their plan working as the walkers are going where they’re supposed to go, and Carter shakes Rick’s hand, telling him he was right. But as Carter is going ahead to make sure the parade is moving correctly, Carter gets attacked by one stray walker stuck in a tree.  The walker bites his cheek off and he starts screaming, attracting some of the walkers into the forest, off course.

Flashback:

Rick gives him the key to the house, offering Morgan to stay with the group, and offering him to hold Judith.
Morgan reminds him that Rick is still the same man he was before. Rick admits wanting to kill Carter, as it’s easier because he could screw things up, but realized that he didn’t have to do it. The Carter doesn’t get it, and he’s going to die no matter what.

Present:

Carter’s screaming is definitely drawing the walkers. Rick tries to tell him to be quiet, but he doesn’t, so Rick kills him, and the others draw the walkers back onto the road. Morgan is witness to it and so is Michonne.
Morgan knows that’s how it is, but he’s not happy about it. Michonne knows, too, but she ain’t happy either.  Uh oh.

Flashback:

Rick meets with Jessie in the armory. Jessie warns Rick that he can’t touch Ron, he can’t talk to Ron because he won’t hear it (since Rick killed his dad, of course.) She tells him that Rosita is going to teach her and she’ll teach her sons. Obviously, she doesn’t want Rick’s help.  Yeah, Rick killing Pete in front of her probably wasn’t going to win him her heart.

Abraham asks Sasha if she’s doing this because she wants to die. She tells him no.

Glenn tells Nick he’s not ready, but he will be and he will make it right.

Present:

This whole thing seems too easy.  Something big is brewing as they continue leading the walkers where they want them to go.

Suddenly, a loud horn blares and starts blaring and it’s not stopping, leading the walkers off the road, but no one knows what it is. Michonne and Rick realize it sounds like it’s coming from the community. They start running back to home.  The horn is still blaring.
