There are several movie tie-in books scheduled for this year, one of which is The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Annual 2013. The book was released on August 30 and features character pictures of the 13 dwarfs, Gandalf and other characters including a first look at Thranduil the Elvenking.

“On his head was a crown of berries and red leaves, for the autumn was come again.
In the spring he wore a crown of woodland flowers.
In his hand he held a carven staff of oak.”

May not have been what people were expecting from the description in the book but he fills the part  of Elvish and as with everything Peter Jackson has decided to put in the film, we can feel confident that this Thranduil is exactly what is needed.
