In a last ditch effort and showing the difficulties of the search, the studio and the casting directors even took the unusual position to make the search an open call, setting up the website ReadyPlayerOne.com, basically letting the entire world submit for the part of Wade Watts.

In this futuristic society, Wade Watts is one of several players involved in a worldwide virtual game to win a jackpot worth billions of dollars.  Of course, he and the other competitors have to solve tricky riddles, riddles that involve 80s pop culture references, to unlock the keys to the next phase of the contest.  And there are others willing to kill for such a prize.
