Discover the surreal, chilling world of Victoria Scott’s VIOLET GRENADE!

Victoria Scott‘s new novel, Violet Grenade, isn’t your average YA tale. It’s got dark mistresses, stone giants, and a girl with a dangerous demon in her head. When they all collide, things are bound to reach a new level of wild!

Scott recently talked to Happy Ever After about the unique characters, her favorite scenes, and the possibility of a sequel. Take a look!

Jessie: I love that each of the characters in Violet Grenade has really distinctive voices. How did you write them so uniquely?

Victoria: Thank you! Working with Domino and Wilson was tough, because they are two different characters, but they’re also essentially the same person. Since Wilson is Domino’s second personality, I needed them to have their own unique voice, while keeping the two closely linked. I ended up creating character profiles and performing in-depth interviews for each of them. That’s when much of the content fell into place.

Jessie: Tell us about Domino and Cain!

Victoria: I’d love to! I’ll tell you that there’s a particular scene that I’m quite in love with in which Domino visits Cain in his “room” in the basement. There’s a storm raging outside the house, and Domino has a moment where she thinks Cain looks like an animal behind the bars that separate her … from his bed. Spoiler: She ventures inside that cage, but the scene doesn’t end how you imagine it might.

DOMINO: A girl with blue hair and a demon in her mind.

CAIN: A stone giant on the brink of exploding.

MADAM KARINA: A woman who demands obedience.

WILSON: The one who will destroy them all.

When Madam Karina discovers Domino in an alleyway, she offers her a position inside her home for entertainers in secluded West Texas. Left with few alternatives and an agenda of her own, Domino accepts. It isn’t long before she is fighting her way up the ranks to gain the madam’s approval. But after suffering weeks of bullying and unearthing the madam’s secrets, Domino decides to leave. It’ll be harder than she thinks, though, because the madam doesn’t like to lose inventory. But then, Madam Karina doesn’t know about the person living inside Domino’s mind. Madam Karina doesn’t know about Wilson.
