In “The Same Boat” recap, Carol and Maggie have to deal with their captors and the psychological state it’s put them in
In “The Same Boat” recap episode of The Walking Dead, we delve into the goings-on with Maggie and Carol as they try to stay alive while being held hostage by a small group of Saviors all the while dealing with the emotional stress of their past and current actions. It’s a powerful episode that sits with you for a while.
Carol (Melissa McBride) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan) are outside the building and are held by a group of people some of the Saviors. They are held hostage as Rick and the rest are about to kill another of them. The leader of the group, who we later know as Paula (Alicia Witt) wants to talk trade with the guy, Primo (Jimmy Gonzales). Rick tries to set something up right away, but Paula tells Rick they’ll get back to him.
Maggie and Carol are gagged, with hands tied, and covered to prevent them from seeing where they’re going. They are brought to a safe house and their feet are tied as well. They’re left alone in a room – that is, after they drag out a dead body from the room, and Carol grabs the rosary that was left behind by the dead body, and first hides it in her pocket. For some reason, Carol starts hyperventilating and the group comes in at this point after having dealt with some walkers that are lurking about. They take their gags off after Maggie makes a commotion, and Carol takes the rosary out and starts putting it to her lips, kissing and seemingly praying, too.
Carol reveals to them that Maggie’s pregnant, saying she doesn’t care what happens to her but to protect the baby. The older lady Molly (Jill Jane Clements) starts smoking and Carol hints to put it out, but she doesn’t do so until the dark-haired girl, Michelle (Jeananne Goossen), tells her to, looking somewhat sympathetic to Maggie. Molly already has cancer so she doesn’t really care about it killing her anyway.
Donnie (Rus Blackwell), the guy that Carol shot in the arm is suffering at the beginning of the episode, is still bleeding a lot and Maggie tells them he is dying, but they’re waiting for another team to arrive first before they do anything about it. Donnie starts freaking out, pissed at the way Paula is handling things, and tells her to shoot Carol and Maggie already. He knocks Paula down, but Maggie and Carol try to stop him, too, but he throws Maggie down and he kicks Carol in the back a few times. Paula finally knocks him out, and Michelle takes Maggie to another room to interrogate her and find out where they’re stationed at.
Maggie notices Michelle’s pinky is missing and she asks her what happened. Michelle explains that she got caught stealing. She reveals she was pregnant, too, but lost the baby.
Rick calls them, trying to get moving on the trade, but Paula is not cooperating. They ask Carol why they killed all their people. Carol tells them about the ambush. Carol says they had to stop Negan because he sounded like a maniac. Molly says they’re all Negan, but Carol doesn’t know what that means.
Donnie is still knocked out. Carol asks for a cigarette from Molly. Paula asks what Carol’s afraid of. Paula talks about one of the inspirational e-mails she read when she used to be a secretary – the carrot, the egg, and the coffee beans tale. She reveals she used to have a family – a husband and four girls, but they’re all dead now. She says she’s better than what she was and stronger. Carol says Paula’s the one who’s afraid to die, and says it’s going to happen if they don’t work out this trade.
Paula contacts Rick and says they want to make a trade. She tells them when and where to meet, but after she ends the call, she’s suspicious about it, saying it was too easy, and now thinks they’re going to kill them. She calls the second team to ask their ETA. They leave Carol in the room and Carol is able to break free using her crucifix. She finds Maggie and frees her.
Carol wants to leave, but Maggie says they can’t leave them alive, insisting they have to finish this. Carol is hesitant. They find Donnie and Maggie says he’s already dead. Molly goes back into the room after some time and gets bit by Walker Donnie. In the distraction, Maggie kills Molly rather viciously while Carol watches. They leave and seconds later, Paula enters and sees Molly on the floor. She pulls a gun and is ready to kill Maggie and Carol. In the hallway, she shoots at them but runs out of bullets. Carol pulls a gun on her but pleads with Paula run even while Maggie is insisting she shoot.
Michelle appears and attacks Maggie with a knife, slicing slicing through Maggie’s shirt, barely missing her stomach. Carol shoots her point-blank in the head. Paula sees the Carol that we know, and asks what Carol was so afraid of. They get into a hands-on battle, but Paula pushed into a spike in the wall and, with walkers tied up but at close range, they start eating her up.
While hiding for the arriving party, Maggie says she killed 18 people and she could’ve killed Donnie, but hesitated. Maggie just tells her not to think about it, and that they’re almost done. The arriving party comes and they trap them in a room and burn them alive.
Rick and his group arrive at the safe house entrance. Carol and Maggie are not okay. Maggie tells Glenn she can’t do this anymore. Carol tells Daryl she’s not okay.
Rick asks Primo about Negan, but Primo says he’s Negan. Rick apologizes and shoots him in the head. Carol is clearly affected by this and is holding the crucifix so tightly in her hand that she’s bleeding.
