DC Comics villain The Joker has a standalone film in the works!
The Joker is one of the most iconic villains in comic history and he’s had many appearances on the big screen, but he’s never quite been the leading man. Warner Bros. and DC are looking to change that with a new origin film that would stand out from the other current DC Comic adaptations.
While Jared Leto played The Joker in Suicide Squad and will do so again in its sequel and the Gotham City Sirens film, Deadline reports that this new project will have another (possibly younger) actor taking on the character. The studio is allegedly looking to make the film “a gritty and grounded hard-boiled crime film set in early-’80s Gotham City.”
There’s a strange combination of creators behind the project so far: Todd Phillips, known best for comedy films like The Hangover, will direct. Scott Silverman (8 Mile, The Fighter) is penning the script. And none other that Martin Scorsese has signed on to producer.
The film is still in the early development stages, so we’re a long ways out from the (potential) final product.
