Want to watch Game of Thrones on IMAX?

You may have wondered what watching HBO’s Game of Thrones on IMAX screens would be like.  How much more detailed can it look when the someone’s eyes get pushed into their head when you’re watching it on a large format screen?  I’m thinking I will never know since my own eyes can’t seem to open during those types of gruesome scenes.  However, I know many Game of Thrones fans are not that squeamish and may find this news something of a thrill for them.

According to Deadline, two episodes from HBO’s highly popular series will be re-mastered for IMAX giant-screen format and will screen for one week only, January 23-29.

No word on which two episodes they will be, but I wouldn’t doubt them to be probably two of the most talked about episodes of the season.  I’m guessing a Red Viper and a Mountain might be one of them, but that’s just me speculating.  Of course, a wedding wouldn’t be out of the question, either, seeing as how lovely the color purple can look on a large screen.

Could the Red Viper episode be one Game of Thrones on Imax?

Being that this is the most digitally-pirated television series ever, this may be a way for those who aren’t subscribers of HBO to pay their debts, as a Lannister would say.  And everyone in attendance will also get treated to a trailer of Season 5 following the two-episode screening.

“The cinematic brilliance and grand scope of the series is perfect for the IMAX format,” said Pamela Levine, HBO’s Chief Marketing Officer.

This is very true, considering that the show does their filming on location, something of a rarity for a series, due to the cost of doing so.  Pamela went on to explain the excitement of using IMAX:

“We are always looking to provide fans with new and exciting ways to experience the show, and viewing two key episodes, along with the new trailer, on such an impressive platform makes for a great event.”

Of course, IMAX is probably just as excited for this opportunity to raise the stakes on their screening format as well.  Here’s what IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond said about screening a TV series for the first time:

“IMAX always seeks innovative ways to provide moviegoers a unique and differentiated experience and today’s partnership with HBO and Game of Thrones achieves just that. This deal also furthers our efforts to offer exhibitors the opportunity to participate in alternative forms of content in a new and exciting way.”
