Watch The STAR TREK: DISCOVERY Comic-Con Press Conference

The cast and creators behind Star Trek: Discovery, including Sonequa Martin-Green, Jason Isaacs, Doug Jones, Shazad Latif, Mary Wiseman, Anthony Rapp, James Frain, Rainn Wilson, Alex Kurtzman, Gretchen J. Berg, Aaron Harberts, Heather Kadin, and Akiva Goldsman, chatted with the press at San Diego Comic-Con and we were in attendance to catch some great insight and laughs from the group!

Many of the cast members were fans of The Original Series and later iterations of the Star Trek universe, so they happily chatted about the gadgets, the nostalgia, the themes, and the profundity of experiencing it all for themselves. Sonequa Martin-Green, who stars as Commander Michael Burnham, got especially emotional talking about the honor of working on a show that “will bring people together”.

“I think now more than ever, Trek is needed to remind people of who we can be– the best of who we can be,” said executive producer Alex Kurtzman. “And it’s always been a mirror to a time in which it reflected, and right now, and the question of how you preserve and protect what Starfleet is in the wake of a challenge like war and the things that must be done in war. This is a very interesting problem and it feels like a very topical one.”

“There’s an idea that– one of my favorites– that we explore on the show is acculturation and how, when that happens, it doesn’t have to mean assimilation,” added Martin-Green. “That’s really one of the pillars of Star Trek and what it teaches: That we don’t have to let go of who we are to learn who you are. We can do it at the same time … It’s touched on here in a way that I think honors the legacy, but also carries it to the next level.”

Watch the full press conference below in two parts.

Star Trek: Discovery premieres on both CBS and the CBS All Access streaming service on September 24, 2017. After the live airing, the second episode will be made available on CBS All Access, and the rest of the season will be released in weekly increments on the streaming service after that.
