Fox has found a screenwriter for Steelheart with Carter Blanchard, who signed on to adapt the YA novel by Brandon Sanderson, with Shawn Levy producing it under 21 Laps.
Steelheart is the first book of The Reckoners trilogy, and the premise is that the world is inexplicably hit with a an energy burst in the sky. Various people around the world are inflicted with some kind of superpower from it, but instead of using it for good, they use it to rule their territory in a tyrannical way, killing and destroying wherever they are, whenever they want. These super-powered humans, called Epics, find a foe in The Reckoners, regular humans who find their weaknesses to kill them. Teenager David Charleston wants to join the Reckoners, and then kill the Epic named Steelheart.
Being a fan of the books, I’m really excited to see this on screen. It’s fun and adventurous and dramatic and thrilling enough to be a great sci-fi thriller, with a young, often humorous, protagonist.
Carter Blanchard wrote the screenplay for Independence Day: Resurgence, the sequel to the 1996 blockbuster, Independence Day. Resurgence is currently in production and will be released in theaters June 24, 2016. He also wrote the screenplay for a thriller titled Near Death, which is in pre-production.
Shawn Levy may also direct the film.
