Teen bullying drama based on award-winning YA novel headed to Hulu!

Hulu struck a deal with 3Pas entertainment and Jane The Virgin star Gina Rodriguez‘s I Can and I Will Productions banner to adapt Meg Medina‘s popular YA novel Yaqui Delgado Wants To Kick Your Ass!

The aptly titled book follows a Latina teen named Piddy Sanchez who becomes the target of bullying after a volatile classmate, Yaqui Delgado, decides she’s too stuck-up compared to the other girls at their Brooklyn high school. Rumors swirl about what exactly Piddy did to get on Yaqui’s bad side, but when Yaqui decides to start acting on her threats, the story becomes a tale “confronting bullying, racial tensions and questions of identity.” The novel is the winner of several awards, including the Pura BelprĂ© Medal for Narrative in 2014.

According to Deadline, Gina Rodriguez is not expected to act in the show but will serve as an executive producer on the project, alongside writer Dailyn Rodriguez and Eugenio Derbez and Ben Odell of 3Pas.

Picking up Yaqui Delgado could be Hulu’s answer to Netflix’s much-hyped adaptation of Thirteen Reasons Why, featuring executive producer Selena Gomez. Though the story endgames are very different, both are award-winning novels about the effects of rumors and bullying on teens.

Hulu has not announced a tentative release date for the project.
