JOKER finds its female lead and a love interest in Zazie Beetz!

DC Entertainment is taking a new approach to one of comics’ most beloved villain, The Joker, with a new standalone film directed by Todd Phillips and starring Joaquin Phoenix in the titular role.

Joker will be a origin story for the character, a darker study of how criminal behavior emerges, but not much else is known about it. Now, a new casting announcement offers a little more detail.

Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2, Atlanta) has reportedly signed on for the female lead in the film, described by THR as “a single mother who catches the interest of the man who will become the ‘clown prince of crime.'” Unfortunately, pretty much nothing else is known about the character at this time.

Joker is set to start filming in September and is due to hit theaters on October 4, 2019.
